Roskilde Fjord was a very important waterway in wartime and in connection with the Vikings’ access to the open sea and beyond. To defend Roskilde from attack, 5 Viking ships were sunk in the narrow channel at Skuldelev north of Roskilde. For a time, Roskilde was the royal seat of King Harald Bluetooth, and it is believed that he built the first church in Roskilde.

Roskilde Cathedral is a unique building and included in the Unesco World Heritage Convention. With its long history, the Cathedral is a journey through almost 1000 years of Danish history. Many Danish kings and queens are buried in the Cathedral.
