In Norse mythology, the world tree Yggdrasil (also known as the tree of life) is the mighty, evergreen ash tree that stands at the center of the world and has its three roots in the realms of death, giants and humans. At the three roots are also three springs, including Mimir’s well, where Odin gains wisdom by pledging his one eye. The name “Yggdrasil” means “Ygg’s horse”, and Ygg (= the terrible one) is one of Odin’s many nicknames.
